MakeBoro Center for Arts + Innovation
The “Old IGA” has sat vacant for several years in the heart of Willsboro, NY, sending a negative message to community members and visitors alike. Its location - situated near the beautiful Boquet River with the Library, History Museum and Senior Center in the same block - is a tremendous asset for community use. In 2016, a group of local community members began talking with the Town of Willsboro about the potential to transform the building into a makerspace. Often described as “a community center with tools”, a makerspace is a place where people can gather to share ideas and resources to create, invent and learn. Our makerspace – MakeBoro - will be rooted in arts and innovation with an emphasis on environmental stewardship.
Transforming the Old IGA into MakeBoro Center for Arts + Innovation is one step closer to completion thanks to a generous gift from The Nature Conservancy, who has granted ownership of the building to Makers Guild Inc. in support of the project.
MakeBoro Center for Arts + Innovation will provide enrichment opportunities to all members of the local and surrounding communities. Our programs will cultivate collaboration and creativity through arts, science, technology and innovation. MakeBoro will feature workshops outfitted with cutting-edge tools, educational opportunities, exhibits, events and a “Makers-In-Residence” program. The facility will provide the space and resources to nurture a variety of entrepreneurial activities.
A cross section of our diverse community including local artists, entrepreneurs, farmers, designers, engineers, librarians and historians from the greater Willsboro area gathered in the summer and fall of 2017, to take part in community visioning workshops. The findings demonstrate a tremendous pride in our community and a strong desire and need for the MakeBoro Center for Arts + Innovation.
